The work of the Western Esoteric Tradition is the expansion of consciousness. The purpose of this work is to realise the Divine Intention, which is concerned with the true purpose and destiny of each one of us.
The Mysteries are a specialist aspect of religion, and their main concern is regeneration of the individual by his/her own efforts. Regeneration involves change; when successful, we change ourselves. Our members need the balance and experience to adjust to changed viewpoints on all kinds of relationships.

An initiate becomes; he is not manufactured. It is a gradual process of organic interior development and not through any ceremony or external process.
Great knowledge, strength or ability do not make a person an initiate. Many are already initiated before the ceremony; while others after passing through it are not, lacking the necessary inner growth. For them, that possibility lies in the future.

Dion Fortune was born Violet Mary Firth on 6th December 1890 in Llandudno, North Wales. After a time at horticultural college, she went on to study psychology at the University of London. This led her to work as a counsellor in a psychotherapy clinic. She was deeply interested in the esoteric and became a member of a lodge run by Theodore Moriarty. From there she became a member of the Golden Dawn, and the Theosophical Society. Eventually she split from these groups forming her own, which was to become The Society of the Inner Light. She had a strong connection to Glastonbury and established a base there and in London.

She died of leukaemia soon after the end of the war and is buried in Glastonbury cemetery.
